We're lucky to have Derrick as a moderator, here is his biography:
Derrick L. Williams, a retired Air Force Senior Master Sergeant and Owner/Founder of Group Innovation & Diversity Training Associates, has over twenty years of human resources management and training experience. As an Equal Opportunity and Treatment/Human Relations Technician he has been intimately involved with organizational issues impacting on the human relations climate and performance effectiveness of macro and micro working environments. Mr. Williams has been the personal advisor to senior level managers and has designed and conducted countless training programs addressing such areas as organizational development and leadership, race relations, cross cultural awareness, conflict management, inter-cultural communications, group dynamics, sexual awareness and assertiveness training, problem solving, managerial and supervisory skills and a host of other training areas designed to improve the interaction and effectiveness of individuals and groups.

He is a graduate of the Department of Defense Equal Opportunity and Management Institute, renown for its training of Human Resource Managers and Technicians throughout the armed services. Additionally, Mr. Williams served for three years on the faculty as an instructor/ facilitator and curriculum manager responsible for the development and supervising the instructional delivery of three major blocks of educational material. He has also attended the Air Force Technician Drug and Alcohol Abuse Control Course (362 Hours) and was appointed curriculum manager, Air Force Guard and Reserve Drug & Alcohol Curriculum Manager. Mr. Williams holds the distinction of being awarded the recognition of Master Instructor/ Facilitator by The Under Secretary of Defense and also the Master Instructor Award by the Air Forces’ Air Training Command. He is the recipient of numerous instructional and speaking awards for his platform skills. Having served as the Superintendent of the Air Force Drug & Alcohol Control School and Advanced Human Relations Education Course as well, Mr. Williams has accumulated hundreds of hours of classroom and small group communication experience.

As the Southwest Regional Consultant and lead trainer for Group Dynamics and Strategy Training Inc..., a major consulting and training firm, based in Washington D.C., Mr. Williams has worked with the Orlando, Florida Orange County School System and community organizations in conflict mediation, human relations and cultural awareness training.

He has helped to assess and design training for the New York City and Pontiac Michigan Police Departments. He has also provided leadership and Team-Building Training for the San Antonio Police Department Academy. He has consulted with representatives from the London Police Department in developing strategies for dealing with multi-cultural environments.

Additionally, he has provided organizational in-service training for managers and personnel of the Air Force Village, The Social Actions Staff Officer's Course at Lackland Air Force Base, effectiveness training for the Ella Austin Community Center, cross-cultural awareness and diversity training for the Texas Youth Commission (TYC), The Villages, Inc., who provides services to the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, Texas Department Of Criminal Justice and Sam Houston State University, San Antonio, Texas, Department of Community Initiatives, San Antonio State Hospital (Texas Department of Mental Health and Retardation), team building, cultural-awareness and Sexual Harassment Awareness Prevention Training at Kelly Air Force Base, In-Service Residential Child Care Licensing training for The Texas Department of Human Services, academic and instructional presentations to graduate students at Our Lady of The Lake University (Worden School Of Social Work), supervisory training for the University Of Texas At San Antonio (UTSA) Student Affairs' staff and has served as a consultant / trainer for the UTSA College of Business Entrepreneurial Development Center in the area of self-esteem and human relations training for program participants. Mr. Williams has worked with the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) by providing "mentorship and motivational training" for teachers and other program participants. His experience and knowledge of young people has been called upon by the San Antonio Drug & Alcohol Abuse Council to assist in the design of the Gang Alternative Prevention Program (G.A.P.P.).

Mr. Williams' educational accomplishments includes an Associates Degree in Social Services, a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences and a Master of Arts Degree in Human Resources Development. His involvement in the field of the behavioral sciences, organizational effectiveness, cross-cultural awareness, race-relations education and life skills training has been credentialized by his broad base experience in working with organizations and individuals in both the private and public sector.

FOUNDER/OWNER: (Qualifications)

The founder/owner of the company (founded in 1990), Derrick L. Williams, M.A., Human Resources Development, former Superintendent of the Air Force's Aerospace School of Applied Behavioral Sciences (responsible for Drug & Alcohol Abuse; Human Relations Education; and, Management/ Leadership Training). He has also been a faculty member of the Department of Defense Equal Opportunity and Management Institute, focusing on organizational effectiveness and development; diversity and communication skills. He has over thirty years experience in research, design and delivery of special emphasis training programs. Additionally, Mr. Williams holds Department of Defense training certificates in such areas as: Instructional Systems Development (ISD); Advanced Management and Leadership; Counseling and Guidance; Drug & Alcohol Abuse; Supervisory Skills; Communications; Instructor Technology and Organizational Consulting and Assessment.

EXPERIENCE/PREVIOUS CONTRACTS & PROJECTS:

Mr. Williams has a solid background in organizational development and training. He has conducted managerial and supervisory training at all levels, in the private and public sector. Mr. Williams holds the distinction of Master Lecturer/Facilitator, through the Department of Defense and Master Instructor, by the Air Force Training Command and has conducted hundreds of classes in various human resources related areas. He spent over two years as the Southwest Regional Consultant/Lead Trainer, Group Dynamics & Strategy Training Inc., a Washington D.C., national consulting firm. He assisted in the development of organizational effectiveness training for the Pontiac, Michigan Police Department; has provided consultive services and training to the Florida, Orange County School System.

To mention only a few, his company has worked with the San Antonio Drug and Alcohol Council; developed training material for the Exxon Cooperation, through a Houston Texas firm, Leadership Thru Innovation Associates; conducted training for Kelly Air Force Base's Director of Team Training, Directorate of Aerospace Equipment Management Division; and, Aircraft Production Division; instructional training at Our Lady of The Lake University, Worden School of Social Work; Wayland Baptist University; supervisory and management in-service training, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), Student Affairs Staff; cross-cultural/diversity training for Texas Youth Commission (TYC); Casey Family Foster Care Program, San Antonio Division; Texas Department Of Criminal Justice; The Texas Department Of Human Services; San Antonio State Hospital; Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation; Sam Houston State University; San Antonio, Texas Department Of Community Initiatives; Bexar County Sheriff's Department (Adult Detention Division); and, has been a consultant/trainer for the UTSA College of Business Entrepreneurial Development Center.


Mr. Williams' professional qualifications and experience in working with people and organizations provide a specialization that the client system finds appealing. Conducting organizational assessments, administering evaluation feedback tools, working with organizational personnel in developing tailored programs are dynamic features of the company. Mr. Williams has logged hundreds of hours in facilitating adult small/large group sessions.

Mr. Williams is also a local real estate entrepreneur, owning and managing 32 units. He is a strong believer in developing the Black community and being independent. An advocate of PowerNomics, Mr. Williams continues in his development of black business and has multiple plans for the future. He has served as the President of the Black Community Development Program, Director of Project Able, has served as President of UJIMA, an agency for assisting in the adoption of Black children within Black families, has served as the Vice President of Southwest Council for Self-Esteem, Black Contractors of San Antonio Member, Black Roundtable Member, and Co-Host of the popular San Antonio T.V. talk show-“The UMOJO Circle.” His Afrocentric view of the world and all circumstances makes him an astute researcher of issues impacting Africans in America (African-Americans). His pro-Black stance has been responsible for the development of a number of lectures and presentations on such issues as the Black Family, The Development of The Black Child, The Oppositional Logic of Malcolm X and a host of developmental issues of grave importance to the cultural and human survival of Black People. Other lectures, seminars and workshop areas include The Manifestation of Personal Racism, Accommodation and Pro-Racist Behavior, Prejudice & Discrimination, Power, Authority and Control, Concepts of Culture, Cross-Cultural & Interracial-Interracial Communications, Black Hair, Pride and Politics, The Psychological Images Of Slavery and Racism, Conflict Mediation and Planned Re-negotiation, Human Relations 101, Workplace Diversity, Race Relations 101, Crossing-Differences, Anger Management and Assertiveness Training, Group Dynamics and Personal Skills and Developing Independent Black Communities thru Black Entrepreneurship. A new passion in his life is nutritional development and health and is working on a number of lectures and seminars which are designed to enlighten and liberate African people from ill health, obesity and degenerative disease. His love for people continues to be reflected in his community work and spirit of volunteerism. A father of five and grandfather of eight makes his work a necessity for the generations that he has helped to create! He feels that we should all justify the air that we breath and "All New Birth Requires Pain" but the benefit of knowledge is emancipatory and curative! Mr. Williams is available for workshops, seminars, lectures and Black History Presentations.
