What has grown to become the Texas Black History Month Calendar started
as a question posed by then San Antonio Councilman Art A. Hall to a
City executive team member: “What are we going to do for Black History
Month?” The executive, in turn, asked the same question of a staff
member, who came to the swift conclusion that nothing needed to be
‘done.’ Instead, first identify projects, programs, and activities
already in place; then, create a vehicle to promote the events. Genius
is oftentimes born of necessity, and given the need to provide a
reasonable response to Mr. Hall, the San Antonio Black History Calendar
(the genius idea) was born. In it’s first year, the calendar presented
information about more than 100 events produced by neighborhood groups,
churches, libraries, schools, colleges, universities, business and
corporate interests, and non-profit organizations - in San Antonio!
A small, albeit highly effective and seriously efficient team of
professionals representing the City of San Antonio, community-based
organizations, an independent marketing firm and a design studio formed
to create the first calendar in 2005. First published online and
featured in alternative and community newspapers; the calendar is now
also enjoys editorial and promotional support of the metropolitan daily
newspaper, The San Antonio Express-News. Additional indicators of our
growth and impact is the expansion beyond a City of San Antonio project
to an independent community-based enterprise that enjoys corporate
support. Under the able leadership of Price Consulting, the San Antonio
Black History Month Calendar continues to partner with local
government, corporate, small-to-medium business, and nonprofit entities
to deliver news and information about the month-long annual celebration
of African-American history and culture in February.
We boldly suggest that the calendar is an idea of genius quality,
primarily because it’s an idea too good to keep all to ourselves. What
began as an effort to serve a single metropolitan community is now
available statewide, and will inform you of opportunities all over
Texas. Contributions by Americans of African descent are significant,
and it is important for you to be aware and support the programs,
exhibits, performances, presentations, dedicated to commemorating Black
History in your community. We are committed to gathering as much
information as we can find, and making it easily available and
accessible -- all for your convenience.
Thanks, for stopping by the site, and checking us out. Our hope is
that you will find our postings helpful in your search for
comprehensive listings of Black History Month -- now, go out and do
your part by attending, supporting, and participating in as many of
these wonderful events you are able.
